Between the river and the sea
At the mouth of the beautiful Romaine River, where the river meets the sea, you’ll discover the otherworldly landscape of Romaine Bay, which was shaped by glaciers thousands of years ago.
The bay is sea kayaker’s paradise. The Romaine Bay is the perfect place to try sea kayaking for the first time, even with a young family. It’s shallow depth and narrow mouth means it has small waves and warmer water than the surrounding Gulf of St. Lawrence. And, with two rivers bringing freshwater from the boreal forest into the bay, it is home to a rich ecosystem.
The bay is filled with many granitic rock islets, a geographic anomaly in an area home to mostly limestone islands. These islands are scattered throughout the bay, forming two small archipelago-like micro-mazes. Because it’s so shallow and maze-like you can only get to it by sea kayak or small boat, which means we are often the only visitors on the water.
During nesting season these islets are teeming with life: terns, gulls, eiders and several other species of birds. Seals are common close to the waterfalls, and we can sometimes spot minke whales snorting further away at sea.
