Anticosti, l'île fabuleuse
This trip is focused on discovering the island environment of Anticosti, rather than distance performance. We plan short days on the water to have time to fully enjoy the view from our camps on the island’s beaches, or to explore the rivers by hiking. This could also allow us to keep the same camp for two days in case of more difficult weather conditions.
Breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, unique geology and a rich history strewn with shipwrecks give Anticosti Island a completely unique character. No wonder it is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will explore during this trip the north side of the Island, in the heart of the Anticosti National Park, between the turquoise waters, the impressive limestone cliffs and the pristine rivers.
Day 1 : Port-Menier
We meet in the village of Port-Menier, from where we leave by minibus to reach the Pointe-Carleton sector, on the north shore of the island. After about two hours of driving, we will take the end of the afternoon to set up our first camp near the shore, very close to the Wilcox shipwreck and the Carleton lighthouse.
From day 2 to day 5 : Pointe-Carleton to Baie-de-la-Tour
From Pointe-Carleton, we load the kayaks in the morning and spend 4 more nights on a sea-kayak expedition, navigating east. We will camp on secluded beaches, overlooking some of the most beautiful scenery on the island. We will pass the mouth of the Vauréal River, before continuing to Baie-de-la-Tour, where we can admire the steep cliffs of this sector. The itinerary plans rather short days in kayak, 10 to 15 kilometers on average, which will leave plenty of time to make stops along the way, explore the banks and rivers on foot, and relax at our campsites.
Days 6 and 7 : The Vauréal River canyon and return to Port-Menier
On the way back to Port-Menier, we will stop to hike in the Vauréal River canyon to admire one of the island’s must-see attractions. This 7 km hike takes approximately 3 hours. We go up the river bed, sometimes walking in the water, up to the impressive waterfall, 76 meters high. After this short hike, we will continue the road to the village, where we will spend a last, more comfortable night in a lodge.
Expedition travel - Intermediate level - experience required
This trip is aimed at those who have already had some sea kayaking experience (at sea!) and who have a good base of camping experience. Participants will ideally have traveled with us before or demonstrate the abilities necessary for this adventure. We will paddle with loaded kayaks and may encounter variable sea conditions. However, you will be with experienced guides who will ensure safety and choose the best possible routes according to the navigation conditions. This is a good way to gain more experience if you eventually want to carry out your own independent expeditions. Contact us to find out if this trip is right for you.
Throughout the trip, you will be part of the team and will be called upon to participate in camp tasks as well as navigation on the water. As it is the sea that largely decides our progress, we must be open to modifications to the planned itinerary and know how to adjust when the situation requires it.
To participate in this trip, you must be good travel companions (easy happiness, optimism, resourcefulness, flexibility). We reserve the right to refuse candidates who do not correspond to the desired profile. We want to form a team of happy, complementary companions who will make this trip a unique and memorable experience for everyone.
